Transition to high school

Occold Primary School's local feeder high school is Hartismere High School. We work closely with Hartismere to ensure our children have smooth transition from Year 6 to Year 7.

Transition begins as early as Year 5, when the children visit Hartismere High School for sports tournaments, theatre workshops and to watch drama performances. In July of Year 5, Hatismere welcomes Year 5 children into school for a taster afternoon.

In Year 6, children are invited to Hartismere High School on several occasions for taster lessons throughout the year. Various staff from Hartismere also visit the children at Occold too. Our Head of School, Miss Thornton, also meets with Hartismere's SENDCo, DSL and Head of Year 7 to ensure a thorough handover is provided.

In November, our Year 6 children go to Hilltop Outdoor Activity Centre for 5 days alongside fellow Year 6s from Eye, Thorndon and Wortham Primary School. These schools also feed into Hartismere High School and so this shared experience enables the children to get to know one another before Year 7.

Towards the end of the academic year, Year 6 spend two full days at Hartismere, where they really get a feel for what life is like at high school.
